How to Best Utilize Mentors
</aside>
It may be intimidating, but mentors are here to support you!
- Seek targeted advice. Come with a goal for each interaction: “I want feedback on X,” not “I just want to chat.”
- It’d be good to set a time limit (~10min) for yourself and for clarity for the mentor, so you can focus on one main problem at a time.
- Share your Figma link, whiteboard photo, or notes so mentors can react to something concrete. If necessary, give necessary context for the material.
- Be open: you do not need to agree with every suggestion; ask “Can you say more?” when something feels off, that way the mentor can elaborate on their thinking.
- Don’t forget to take notes: assign one teammate as note‑taker so you do not lose insights once the mentor leaves.
- Close the loop: end with “Here’s what we’ll do next based on this” and say thank you; it increases their willingness to help again.

Here are some general questions you could ask to get started:
</aside>
- “We’re on [stage: e.g., problem framing / early sketches / prototype] and stuck on [1–2 sentences]. We’d love 15 minutes of feedback on [specific thing: e.g., our user flow / whether our problem statement makes sense / if our layout supports the task].”
- “What’s the most important thing you’d focus on if you were in our position for the next 2 hours?”
- “Where does this feel confusing or unclear to you as a first‑time viewer?”
- “Do you know any patterns, examples, or products we should quickly look at for inspiration?”
